What could possibly do this?

This morning woke up and looked out to the backyard to find this..

some of these mounds of soil that are piled up on the lawn are larger than a basketball!

The crows hang around because they get the worms off the surface. Something is digging up and making these mounds. No hole in the center or side of the mounds though..

Any idea what this could be?

Should we call animal control?

the mystery is solved.

apparently there is a family of earthworms local to this area.

when they breed, there is a local "upheaval" and this is the result of all the baby worms feeding and moving around.

there are pesticides to kill the worms but our gardner says "the birds will take care of it". dont spoil the soil by spraying it. just let nature do its job.

fair enough. he opened up the soil to show me.. and it was like watching the snakes in the Indiana Jones movie.. No wonder the crows are having a feast!

some of the worms are almost as thick as the little one's pinkie!

you don't need fertilizers. they will perform the nitrogen fixing for you. ;-)

it is still weird that this happened overnight!
